White wines from the grape variety, "Arinto" from Bucelas,
red wines from the grape variety "Ramisco" from Colares and dessert wines from Carcavelos are the three most famous wines. Unfortunately, only the first wine in significant quantities. Bucelos is a rich region whose white wines among the best in Portugal. In Colares there are whites, although not as well known as the reds, but they are popular.
Colares ‘sand wines’ are made in the sandy soils of the land near Lisbon. Because of the sprawling suburbs, there isn't that much space for vineyards which means there aren't enough vineyards to meet demand.
The region is known for its deep colored, full bodied red wines that are high in astringent tannins. Colares became one of the most expensive wines in Portugal. Colares sand wine has a specific aftertaste of nuts and red fruits and a deep amber or bronze colour.
The region has Portugal's highest wine classification as a Denominação de Origem Controlada (DOC). The grape variety is unique to the region: it’s a red grape called Ramisco. It makes wines that are low in alcohol, high in acidity, and pretty high in tannin. They’re challenging young, but as this small tasting showed, they can age fantastically.

Dominant Grapes: Ramisco, Arinto, Boal.
